In the context of rapid change resulting from globalization, pressing concerns about climate change and vulnerable ecosystems like the Biscayne Bay and the Everglades provide a compelling justification for environmental education. This interdisciplinary program seeks to increase appreciation of the native ecosystems of South Florida and to educate students and the general public about its relevance to the community. It is part of interdisciplinary environmental initiative, which encourages students to learn more about the environment, sustainability and ecological citizenship. “Discover Our Backyard” was conceived as an integral part of our coastal environment initiative to weave marine issues into the curriculum and life.
