At FIU, we are breaking the traditional STEM education model where students are expected to passively absorb knowledge. Instead, faculty are using evidence-based instructional strategies that promote students to work collaborative and better engage with the material. These practices have been shown to increase student learning and promote student success in STEM courses.
Courses in all STEM disciplines have been transformed to include diverse practices to promote active learning and minimize instructor-centered exposition-based approaches. Several different strategies and tools are used by instructors to facilitate collaborative peer learning in class and help students articulate scientific ideas during group work.
Learning Assistants
These assistants facilitate learning by helping reach their own understanding through guided questioning.
Active Learning Classrooms
These classrooms are learning spaces intended to promote evidence-based instruction and collaborative work.
Modeling Instruction
Modeling is a student-centric, constructivist approach whereby students build their physics knowledge by developing models through guided activities in a studio format.
